Adobe Creative Suite 4 Product Problems and Solutions

Photshop CS4: _except_handler4_common and msvcrt.dll

Problem

The following error message appeared while loading Adobe Photoshop CS4

The procedure entry point _except_handler4_common could not be located in the dynamic link library msvcrt.dll

Cause

The error is caused by library "msvcrt.dll" missing the exception handler "_except_handler4_common" which is available on the Vista version but not the XP verion of "msvcrt.dll". For some unknown reasons, the Vista specific library file "dwmapi.dll", which is for Vista's Window Manager API, is distributed to XP and linked to "msvcrt.dll" hence causing the missing handler error.

Solution

Find "dwmapi.dll" under <Windows installation directory>/systme32/, and rename it to "dwmapi_.dll".
